Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 9.20.17

The attorney for Gary Otte who was executed last week by the state of Ohio stated that she believed that the inmate suffered pain during lethal injection. She tried but was unable to get help to stop the execution. Ohio, like Alabama uses midazolam in its execution protocol. In addition, more bad news also for us was that the U.S. Supreme Court denied a request for a stay even though Otte had been under the age of 21 at the time of the crime.

Lawyers last Wednesday asked the Alabama Supreme Court to stop the executions since the 11th Circuit Court ordered hearings in a separate lawsuit challenging the humaneness of the state’s lethal injection procedure. They argued the execution should not go forward while there's a pending trial on the "constitutionality of the method of execution that the state intends to use."

"Well, I'm kind of fond of the death penalty," said Rich. "I think we need the death penalty in the state of Alabama, so we're continuing to fight the Equal Justice Initiative and big law firms who have millions of dollars and want to come down here and reverse all of our death penalty cases." Ashley Rich is the Mobile County District Attorney.

The Board decided to get an early start on the next edition of Wings of Hope. Remembering the problems with the last edition due to the sudden death of the typewriter, they were not going to get caught out again. Yes, we are grateful for the donated typewriters but we have no idea when they will actually arrive on life row. And so it is very good that they started early and were able to secure typing help from our sister organization Oppose in Germany. Many, many thanks!
