Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 7.20.16
It is with a heavy heart that we pass on the news of the death of our dear friend Bo Cochran who was exonerated in 1997. “His case helped start the movement in Alabama for reviewing the cases of people wrongly convicted and awaiting execution on Death Row.”
Bo was one of the co-founders of our organization Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty 29 years ago and he never forgot his friends at Holman. I remember Bo, at one of our vigils when he, Gary Drinkard and I took turns reading the names of those executed by the state of Alabama, breaking down saying “I knew them all!” Yes, Bo knew them all and more than that, he was always there to go and testify with me before a city council or before the legislature. Bo was a dear, dear friend as was his wife Shirley, a murder victim’s family member who preceded him in death some years ago. R.I.P. Bo! We loved you! Our condolences go out to his daughters and friends!
The Arise Annual Meeting is set for Saturday, September 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Montgomery at Aldersgate United Methodist Church (6610 Vaughn Rd.) This is an extremely important meeting for us as it is at this meeting that representatives of member groups vote on next year’s focus issues for Arise. There are always many worthwhile issues presented at these meetings and so if you want the death penalty to remain one of Arise’s issues, come and vote. You can register on line at www.arisecitizens.org or contact me if you want to help. Meanwhile we would like to thank our sister group JAM and Mary’s House for their support in so many tangible ways.
See you next week!
