Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 8.24.16

Last week we received the following email which in part said:

“I work on criminal justice reform with Virgin Unite, the non-profit foundation of the Branson Family and Virgin Group, and we're focused on a big death penalty repeal push through the end of this year. We commissioned a study of front-line organizations working toward repeal in the US, and your group was recommended as one of the leaders we should connect with.” This then led to a 40 minute phone conversation about the work we do and the work they do and how we might connect. For now their focus is on CA and Nebraska, which also happens to be in Alabama’s best interest. We will stay in touch!

We were delighted about the stay for Jeff Wood in TX who should not have been on death row to begin with. We believe that no one should be on death row and that every piece of positive death penalty news is one more step towards abolition. So congratulations to TX for doing the right thing.

We are all confronted with a lot of negativity on a daily basis, whether we are on death row or on the street which makes it nice when there is kindness to report. Without mentioning names, but you know who you are, a group of supporters is already working on the Traveling Christmas cards for us. These cards have already been to Europe, different parts of the U.S. and have now returned to Alabama. It is not just that these good people took the time to sign a lot of cards, but they also paid the transportation so that they could be on their way. Thank you and please know we appreciate each and every one of you!

And finally we were glad that we could be part of assisting the flood victims in LA through the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP.

See you next week!
