Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 11.23.16
The day before Thanksgiving and we wish we could send a report that we discussed nothing but positive news during our Thanksgiving party held during our Board meeting today.
A federal judge dismissed Ronald Smith’s lawsuit challenging Alabama’s method of execution. The judge also ended negotiations on the use of a single dose of Midazolam rather than the state’s 3 drug protocol. Ron’s attorneys immediately filed notice of appeal of the judge’s dismissal of the lawsuit in the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
We are well aware of the game the law plays with people’s lives, nevertheless we wonder why it asks us to come up with ways we would like to be killed only to then turn around to say these ways are not acceptable.
SCOTUS has rescheduled the conference regarding TOMMY ARTHUR. The new conference date is 2 December. They will conference both the issue of Hurst and lethal injection.
Thank you to all the groups and individuals who have shared our Action Alert. It has been translated into French and Italian and shared in Canada, France, England, Italy, England, Switzerland and of course in the U.S. Thank you to all who have already written to the Governor. We appeal to all of the others who have yet to write to the Governor on behalf of Ronald B. Smith. Here is the contact information and also the Talking Points. http://www.phadp.org/?q=alerts
And so on this Thanksgiving we are thankful for all our friends who stand with us. We are also thankful to the National Association of Social Workers, AL Chapter whose personal invitation to their Annual Advocacy Day we just received and who wrote that “ Death Penalty Reform is again one of our issues to push for change in the upcoming Legislation Session.”
And yes, we are enjoying our party and our chef is not too bad either! Happy Thanksgiving!
See you next week,
