Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 11.30.16

The Alabama Supreme Court has has denied Ronald Smith's petition challenging the constitutionality of the state's death penalty statute under Hurst v. Florida. A trial judge sentence Smith to death despite the 7-5 recommendation by the jury that he receive a life sentence. Smith, who is scheduled to be executed December 8, is seeking review in the United States Supreme Court.

SCOTUS will hold the conference regarding Thomas Arthur on the 9th. They will address the protocol issue.

Undeterred by the threatening clouds of the execution scheduled for December 8th the Board worked extra hard under the leadership of our chairman to type up and format the latest edition of our newsletter Wings of Hope. It is now in the mail and will then go to the printer and should then be on its way to you very soon. However December 8th remains a reality and so we hope that you will contact Governor Bentley to ask him to commute the death sentence of Ronald B. Smith, our chairman.

Thank you to all the groups and individuals who have shared our Action Alert. It has been translated into French and Italian and shared in Canada, France, England, Italy,  England, Switzerland and of course in the U.S. Thank you to all who have already written to the Governor. A special thanks to the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP for sharing our Alert. We appeal to all of the others who have yet to write to the Governor on behalf of Ronald B. Smith. Here is the contact information and also the Talking Points. http://www.phadp.org/?q=alerts

Mr. Hillard Hamm who together with his wife Ann Hamm publishes the Southeast Alabama Gazette in Dothan has for many years been one of our special friends and supporters. Their paper frequently published our news and once again in the most recent issue carried our Weekly Notes. At age 88 the time has come for retirement. We plan to attend A Special Tribute Program in their honor and have been asked to say a few words. We will be in their debt forever and will miss the Southeast Alabama Gazette.

Unless there is a stay by next Monday there will be no Weekly Notes next week. I will be visiting with Ron on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
