Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 5.10.17

The Talking Point for both Tommy Arthur, May 25th and Robert Melson, June 8th were sent out on Monday. They are also up on our website at http://www.phadp.org/?q=alerts as well as on our Facebook page.  Please if you ever wrote on behalf of any of us to previous Alabama governors or if you are a new friend, now is the time to write, email and to call.

In response to a letter by Tommy Arthur to the Governor which was forwarded by Al.com the following answer from Bryan Taylor, the Governor’s Legal Counsel was received by that news organization:"We just received the letter and it will be reviewed. The AG's (Alabama Attorney General's) office will be given an opportunity to respond, and Gov. Ivey will be thoroughly briefed on all the issues raised by Mr. Arthur and his attorneys."

Meanwhile, Montgomery Circuit Judge Truman Hobbs on Monday dismissed Arthur's lawsuit that claimed the Alabama Legislature, not the prison system, should decide the lethal injection protocol for executions. The request for records of past botched executions was denied.

Our thanks to Alabama New South Coalition for forwarding our appeal to call Senator Cam Ward at 334 242 7873 in support of Senator Hank Sanders’ SB 375.

We were invited to join Catholic Mobilizing Network (CMN) in launching the National Catholic Pledge to End the Death Penalty, beginning May 10th and accepted. We will definitely lend our voice and support to this initiative to end the death penalty and we will be sharing more about the details about this initiative.

The House Committee voted to shorten Death Penalty Appeals and the bill now goes to the full house.

In closing thank you to all who made my birthday so special. A special thank you to Senator Hank Sanders for his birthday call! He is someone who has given us hope for so many years. We are forever in his debt!

See you next week!
