Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 7.19.17

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 7.19.17

The Alabama Arise Annual Meeting is set for Saturday, September 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Montgomery at Aldersgate United Methodist Church (6610 Vaughn Rd). This is the meeting when priority issues for 2018 are chosen by those present. Member groups in good standing, and Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty is one of these, may bring up to 6 representatives to cast 7 votes each. To vote one must be present for the entire presentation of issues. We cannot emphasize enough how important it is that the death penalty remain one of the priorities while at the same time being well aware that there are many other worthwhile issues. If you can help us you can register at arisecitizens.org. If you are coming to help us, please enter our organization in the appropriate place, and why not do it now while you are thinking of it and mark it on your calendar. And yes, I have already done so.

We received some very good news last week from our Spiritual Advisor Don Blocker. He went through all the right channels and received permission to donate 2 typewriters and extra ribbons through the Chaplain’s office to “Life Row”, his words. We can’t even begin to say how grateful we are for this and for the spiritual presence he is for many of us at Holman. Thank you, Don!

This Saturday Kairos is having a fish fry for the men on death row at Holman. They are looking forward to it and are appreciative of this group as well as of others and  their ministries.

The Board wrote a get well card to Senator Hank Sanders who is recovering from surgery. This also provided an opportunity to say thank you for being a beacon of hope for us for so many years.

We would like to voice our appreciation for the work being done by the Catholic Mobilizing Network. Our organization signed on to its pledge to end the death penalty and you will find us listed among other supporters and organizations. If you are interested in signing here is the link https://catholicsmobilizing.org/action/pledge.

 See you next week!
