Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 10.18.17

PLEASE CALL GOVERNOR IVEY 334 242 7100

Once more we had great news which even came a few days before the scheduled execution. Judge Watkins of the Federal District Court granted Torrey McNabb a stay similar to the one granted to Jeffrey Borden so that the lethal injection issue scheduled to be heard would not come too late for him. However the stay was appealed by the State and now we are waiting and hoping that the courts listen to U.S. District Court Judge Watkins who wrote in his stay: “There is insufficient time prior to October 19 to address deliberatively the full panoply of weighty, life-involved issues presented. Because the prejudice to McNabb — his execution — is so great, the equities strongly outweigh the state’s interest in executing McNabb as scheduled on October 19,”. Torrey McNabb was moved to the death cell yesterday.

These last weeks leading up to executions and even if at the end there is a stay have not been easy for all of us. We do our best to stay focused, support the ones with a date the best we can and be supportive of each other. We research the reasons for stays and share them with others and we do our best not to lose sight of our mandate To Be the Other Voice.

We are currently working on an outreach letter to new arrivals on Holman’s death row. As on arrival they are first kept in isolation so that we cannot invite them to one of our meetings, which we do once that becomes possible, it is imperative that they don’t lose valuable time and just kick back. The unfair so called Fair Justice Act means there is no time to waste before they ask for legal representation.

One is fortunate when one has friends during a dark spell who lift ones spirit. At this point we would just like to mention Dr. Katie Owens-Murphy and ask you to stay tuned for some possible amazing news in our future. Whether or not her idea becomes a reality or not, we thank her for her faith in us.

Thank you also to all who stood and continue to stand with us both here in Alabama, in the nation as well as overseas, individuals as well as organizations such as Oppose, Alabama New South Coalition, the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP, SOS, JAM, Alabama Arise, Lifespark/Switzerland, ACAT France and the Catholic Mobilizing Network to End the Use of the Death Penalty and others.

 See you next week!
