Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 10.25.17

We dedicated today’s meeting to the memory of Torrey McNabb. It is still very difficult for us to comprehend the events of last Thursday and we are left with so many questions. Why this sadistic game of back and forth between the various courts raising hopes and then dashing them? Why does the State choose not to appeal the stay of one, which we appreciated, but then a week or so later clamors for the blood of a man whom Alabama society had failed from the beginning? What is going on with the U.S. Supreme Court? Dare we ask? Justice for all? Show us where we can find it! Definitely not in Alabama!

And then another botched execution! Yes, botched and one would have to say willfully botched because why would the courts grant a hearing into the secret protocol if there were not an issue?  It will come too late for Torrey McNabb, as it did for Ron Smith. Does Alabama care? As actions speak louder than words it is obvious that it doesn’t.

Amidst this shockingly horrific display of Alabama justice we were uplifted by the stand taken by a man who we respect and admire: Torrey McNabb who refused to allow the State to whitewash murder by playing its execution games. He rejected a last meal, was unafraid, and told Alabama exactly how he felt about it and by doing so spoke for many of us. You will be unforgotten Torrey, especially by us.  We are proud that we knew you and we thank you!

 See you next week!
