Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 3.28.18

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 3.28.18

As expected Governor Kay Ivey signed into law a bill that would allow execution by nitrogen hypoxia if lethal injection is unavailable or is declared unconstitutional or if the prisoner elects nitrogen hypoxia as the method of execution.

Good news: Attorney Bernard Harcourt said Tuesday that the state will not seek a second execution date for Doyle Lee Hamm under a settlement reached Monday to end ongoing litigation. The terms of the settlement are confidential.

Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty will once more be listed as a supporter of “Starvin’ for Justice”, the annual Fast and Vigil in Washington, DC June 29th-July 2nd. This event brings together many abolition groups and individuals and we are proud to be associated even if we can’t actually be there in person.

We were honored and delighted to receive 5 complimentary tickets from EJI to its Criminal Justice in America session scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 27th. It is part “of an exciting gathering of nationally acclaimed speakers and performers joining in Montgomery for discussion and celebration to mark the Grand Opening of the National Memorial to Peace and Justice and the Legacy Museum.” Our Advisory Board Member Judy Collins will be representing us.

We appreciated the positive responses to our latest edition of Wings of Hope. Feedback is important for all of us.

Anthony Ray Hinton’s memoir “The Sun Does Shine” was released today. We wish him safe travels as he begins his 12 day national book tour.

We want to thank a friend and supporter who is organizing an execution day prayer vigil in Anniston. We will let you know the particulars. What a great way of being the Other Voice!

The men enjoyed the fellowship with the men from Kairos this weekend.

And finally please be The Other Voice on behalf of Walter Leroy Moody scheduled to be executed April 19th.
