Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 4.11.18

A couple of days ago we received a request to remove Sister Francita Schermann from all mailings….deceased. I know I speak for the Board and for many of the men who are no longer with us when I say that Sister Francita, a past Advisory Board Member, will always be part of our history. For many years Sister Francita corresponded with many and was extremely generous and faithful with her donations to our organization. When the time came for her to move to assisted living, she let me know her new address so that she could continue to receive our newsletter. Our organization is 29 years old and so it is not surprising that there are more and more goodbyes to those who knew us when. And yes, we know a lot about goodbyes, too much but still each one is unique. Thank you Sister Francita! Thank you for believing in us! Thank you for caring for us! Thank you for being a much loved member of Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty.

In a recent study published in the Albany Law Review entitled Lethal Rejection it was encouraging to read that nationally the decline in death sentences has been relatively rapid so that in 2016 there were only 31 death sentences imposed. Various contributing factors were cited and certainly here in Alabama the fact that a judge can no longer override a jury which recommends life by a 10-2 vote will help.

Next week Walter Leroy Moody is scheduled to be executed on April 19th. On Monday I will be sending out the Execution Day Vigils. Please, if you have not already done so, contact Governor Ivey to protest this killing, all killings. There are many opportunities to be the Other Voice but none is more important than at the time of an execution.
