Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 9.5.18

As mentioned last week our Advisory Board Member Judy Collins will be presenting our issue Death Penalty Reform at the Arise meeting on Saturday, Sept. 8 2018 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Montgomery. The meeting when the2019 priorities are chosen goes from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. To be able to vote voting representatives must be present for the entire presentation of every issue proposal which will likely run from about 12:30-2:30 p.m. Not every issue can win and so we need YOUR vote so please come and do your part.

The latest edition of our newsletter Wings of Hope was mailed, is up on line thanks to our Information Officer Brandon Fountain and will be in your mailbox very shortly. Thank you for reading and giving us feedback.

On Facebook we shared an Opinion in Alcom written by Jon Broadway a long time friend of our organization entitled “We must remember our history, all of it.” We recommend it and are proud to do so. Talk about standing up for what you believe in!

We were very sorry to hear thatAttorney General Steve Marshall announced that the indictment of former state trooper George Martin will be reinstated and that he will be retried for the 1995 capital murder of his wife in Mobile County. The Alabama Supreme Court today reversed lower court rulings that had dismissed the indictment.

Martin was convicted in 2000 and served 15 years on death row at Holman. In 2015 the conviction was overturned and a new trial was ordered. Rather than proceeding with a retrial, the lower court dismissed the indictment and Martin was freed. And now this! As we are not attorneys we can only speculate why but what we can say that obviously the State has too much money and that this is an election year.

We close with some very good news. Lameco Turner was granted a new trial and if found guilty of capital murder will not receive the death penalty by request of the victim’s family.

And last but certainly not least we sang Happy Birthday to Anthony Boyd our Sgt. At Arms. Happy Birthday Ant!

 See you next week!
