Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 2.20.19

Board meetings continue to be held on a weekly basis and Esther continues to be a participant. We will write reports when we feel that we would like to draw your attention to special events or to newsworthy items.

Our organization has been a member of Alabama Arise for many years and has attended its events whenever possible. This year Alabama Arise’s Lobby Day will take place March 19th and although there are no bills affecting the death penalty directly all bills dealing with poverty issues are also our issues. Esther has preregistered and hopes to see some of our friends/supporters there. Details can be found at the Alabama Arise website.

We sent out an email regarding the book Child of Grace: A Death Row Story by Dr. Chris Brown and the details are also posted on our website. We cannot recommend this courageous book highly enough and were pleased to hear that one of our Advisory Board Members has already ordered a copy.

The Board is hard at work putting our first edition for 2019 of our newsletter Wings of Hope together. It will be at the printer very soon.

We were encouraged by the decision of the Ohio Governor to halt all executions for now due to the flawed protocol and hope Governor Ivey takes note. We were very pleased about the in depth article in the Nation about Rocky Myers who could face execution even though he is severely developmentally delayed. Kudos to his attorneys and investigators!

And finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the individuals and organizations who have reached out to me and to our organization recently.  On March 1st I am being honored by the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP with their Game Changer Award which I will receive at their gala event in Montgomery. And to double the honor Robyn Hyden, the Executive Director of Alabama Arise will be my special guest. It is difficult to find the words to express my gratitude adequately.
