Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 5.1.19

As mentioned last week and as we will continue to mention, Michael Brandon Samra has an execution date for 5.16.19. The State set May 30th as the new execution date for Christopher Lee Price. We have posted the Execution Alerts and Talking Points on our website as well as on our Facebook page and it really only takes a couple of minutes to call Governor Kay Ivey to ask her to grant clemency and to halt all executions. 1-334-242-7100. Thank you for doing that!

Today is the day for the visit from Melissa Brown of the Montgomery Advertiser. We will tell you more about how it went in our next report. We are of course delighted for this opportunity to be what our founder Jesse Morrison said “The Other Voice!”

The Board continues to work very hard and is working on various projects. These range on how to engage the press in filing a freedom of information request about the cost of the death penalty versus the cost of life without. We are one of the few states with the death penalty which refuses to release this information, even though we have the highest per capita death row in the country. The results of these studies invariably show that costs with a death penalty sentence, taking everything into account are always much higher than a life without sentence.

The Board is also exploring the feasibility of having Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty T shirts made. We will keep you updated.

The Board tackled the task of cleaning out the closet, getting rid of papers no longer needed and organizing those which continue to be relevant. That is what you call being organized!

We continue to thank anonymous donors who give by going to our website and using the “donate” button. We would also like to welcome the new members who joined  our email list last week and we are encouraged by the kind messages we receive and which are all forwarded to the Board.
