Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 5.15.19
Tomorrow, unless there is a stay from Governor Ivey Michael Brandon Samra will be executed. We have sent out the list of vigils and hope you can attend. Please note that whether there is a stay or not the Political Protest Vigil organized by our sister organization JAM will take place on the corner of Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd and 8th Ave N across from the Jefferson County Court Building, on the corner of the east end of the Birmingham Museum of Art. 11:30 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. All invited! "Watch with Me One Hour."
May 30th is the execution date for Christopher Lee Price. His Cert petition was denied by the U.S. Supreme Court. We have posted the Execution Alerts and Talking Points on our website as well as on our Facebook page and it really only takes a couple of minutes to call Governor Kay Ivey to ask her to grant clemency and to halt all executions. 1-334-242-7100. Thank you for doing that!
The men at Holman held their vigil on the yard today and will hold another one tomorrow. It is a time for prayer, fellowship and remembrance.
Last week’s Board call with Advisory Board Member Dr. Katie Owens-Murphy, Assistant English Professor at UNA was a huge success and in Dr. Katie Owens-Murphy’s words: “I cannot underscore enough the importance of these recordings, where the PHADP members share, *in their voices,* their work and advocacy. I will be using these recordings when I deliver presentations on campus and at conferences that are related to incarceration and capital punishment. One more megaphone for PHADP! They are brilliant and eloquent and I'm glad the world will get to hear, as well as read, their voices.”
We continue to thank anonymous donors who gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button and of course also those who gave directly. We would also like to welcome the new members who joined our email list last week. We are encouraged by the kind messages we receive and which are all forwarded to the Board.
Thank you to all who have already written or called the Governor asking her to stop all killing by the State. The time is NOW! : 1-334-242-7100.
