Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 5.22.19

Michael Brandon Samra was not granted clemency by Governor Ivey who the day before her denial had stated that “all life is sacred!” According to an article from E.J.I. there are reasons to suggest that the execution was botched. Needless to say this is denied by the D.O.C.

May 30th is the execution date for Christopher Lee Price. His Cert petition was denied by the U.S. Supreme Court. We have posted the Execution Alert and Talking Points on our website as well as on our Facebook page.  It really only takes a couple of minutes to call Governor Kay Ivey to remind her of her statement that all life is sacred, ask her to grant clemency,  and to halt all executions. 1-334-242-7100. Thank you for doing that!

The Trump administration moved to expedite executions. The Justice Department earlier this month declared that the Food and Drug Administration “lacks jurisdiction” to regulate lethal drugs used in executions. The newly disclosed ruling undermines the agency’s ability to block states like Texas from using drugs procured from shadowy overseas distributors. There is now pending federal litigation over the Texas dispute. And a 2012 injunction against the use of such drugs. As we have no idea where Alabama procures its drugs the word “shadowy” can also be used for the ones Alabama uses.

We continue to thank anonymous donors who gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button and of course also those who gave directly. We would also like to welcome the new members who joined our email list last week. We are encouraged by the kind messages we receive and which are all forwarded to the Board. One of these was a Letter to the Editor in the Nation which paralleled two articles in the April 22 edition. The title of the letter was “Spreading Hope-and Justice.” One was the article by Lauren Gill about us, the other about an Immigrant Detention Center. Quoting in part: “The Detention centers are appalling, as are their horrid profit-making goals. But reading about Project Hope in Gill’s article was a moving, inspiring reflection of the resilience of this group in facing trauma. The United States is in desperate need of a countrywide Project Hope.”

Thank you to all who have already written or called the Governor asking her to stop all killing by the State. The time is NOW! : 1-334-242-7100.
