Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 7.3.19

The day before 4th of July! We reflected on the progress that has been made “with liberty and justice for all” or should it have read for “some?” Yes, Alabama just passed a law that the pledge of allegiance will now begin the school day and yes, words are fine when not mandated but actions are so much better!

And speaking of actions, today our Chairman organized a “burrito” thank you celebration in appreciation of all the hard work done by the Board members. We see a lot of good things happening for individuals as well as for our issue because of our organization and are grateful to be part of phadp. “Man’s Search for Meaning!”

The usual 4th of July DOC ice cream treat happened early this year and the men had no problem enjoying it a week early. Meanwhile we have been busy organizing the traditional 4th of July tournaments which include basketball, chess, dominoes, checkers and scrabble.

The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in March sided with The Associated Press and other news outlets seeking Alabama's lethal injection protocol and other records related to an aborted 2018 execution. Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that case is now back before a federal judge. Lawyers for the state told justices the prison system maintains security concerns over the release of some execution procedures, but “accepts that its protocol likely will be disclosed.”

The new correctional phone provider for Holman is Securus Correctional Billing Service: 800-844-6591.

We continue to thank anonymous donors who gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button and of course also those who gave directly. We would also like to welcome the new members who joined our email list last week. We are encouraged by the kind messages we receive which are all forwarded to the Board.

And finally we wish all a happy and safe 4th of July and hope that one day we will be celebrating “justice for all.”
