Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 7.10.19

Each season presents its own challenges also on death row. Summer definitely has one thing in its favor, the recession of the U.S. Supreme Court. For us it is important not to stagnate and so we are organizing not only our closet, a huge task, but also reorganizing our groups and allocating more time to our law class. The U.S. Supreme Court may be on recess but we are most definitely not and are always looking for new ways to BE THE OTHER VOICE at Holman and on the outside.

The fourth of July tournaments were successfully completed on Sunday. Thank you to the organizers and to all the participants and congratulations to all!

We have already cited the new Death Penalty Information Center website and would like to quote from its Mid-Year Review as food for thought for all of us: “At the midpoint of 2019, death sentences and executions remain near historic lows in the United States, with executions and pending execution dates concentrated heavily in a few southern states. The year’s executions and new death sentences have disproportionally involved defendants or prisoners with mental illness, brain damage, and/or severe childhood trauma.” Yes, our society, especially here in the South allows people to drop through the cracks and then punishes them. And the cracks get even wider for the poor and people of color.

The new correctional phone provider for Holman is Securus Correctional Billing Service: 800-844-6591.

We continue to thank anonymous donors who gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button and of course also those who gave directly. We also thank the anonymous donor who chose to donate to us through the Morgan Stanley Global Impact Funding Trust. We thank all who believe in what we do and stand with us. You make a difference!
