Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 8.14.19
Today is the due day for the articles for our upcoming edition of Wings of Hope. They are of course hand written and so then our dedicated typists type them, and after, that comes the formatting, which takes place at another Board meeting. It is quite a job requiring many hours of work and the finished product is always one of which we are rightly proud.
As mentioned in last week’s notes the Episcopalian Bishop of the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast is actively supporting the repeal of the death penalty and now we are studying how to approach the President of the U.S. Catholic Bishops. We are fortunate to have the advice and hands on help in this matter of Advisory Board Member Paul Labatte.
We would also like to thank another Advisory Board Member, Dr. Dale Wisely. Dale was a close and very supportive friend of Darrell Grayson, our chairman who was executed 12 years ago. Dale was not only a close friend but also published Darrell’s poetry in Mercy Seat Press 14 years ago. He recently gave permission to the Poetry Foundation to reprint Darrell’s poem Ghosts over the Boiler. Thank you Dale for all you did for Darrell then and now!
Congratulations to our friend Lauren Gill who writes for the Appeal.Org and whose latest Alabama criminal justice article “Sentenced to Life Without Parole at 17 And Denied Freedom at 52” was published last week. We appreciate her continued interest in our state and its criminal justice system.
We continue to thank anonymous donors who gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button and of course also those who gave directly. We thank all who believe in what we do and stand with us. You make a difference!
