Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 1.8.20

A new year, a new decade and time for a new approach! Recently we began following Conservatives Concerned about the Death Penalty and have been very impressed by their hands on approach to abolishing the death penalty. If there is any state more in need of working across the aisle than Alabama on this issue as well as others we are not aware of it.  The current political climate appears to thrive on demonizing the opposition but if we are serious about abolition we need to stop that right now! We have been in touch with Hannah Cox who is the National Manager of Conservatives Concerned About the Death Penalty and she is standing by ready to help us set up an Alabama Chapter. I hope to hear from you, yes you because I know that there are conservatives right here in Alabama on our email list who believe in abolition. www.conservativesconcerned.org

Our Chairman continues to be in touch with Wayne Verry who leads bible study at St. Paul’s Episcopalian church. A recent topic was the book “The Sun Does Shine” and it was apparently well received. There are many ways of talking about the death penalty, directly or indirectly and this is certainly one of them.

We have to admit that we were blown away to be listed as one of 20 national organizations that are making a big difference by COUNTERPUNCH.org. https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/12/27/the-last-line-of-defense-20-activist-groups-that-are-making-a-difference/

We were also surprised to find an article about our organization Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty in Prison Legal News, a lot of it drawn from the article last year in The Nation by Lauren Gill. As we were not contacted some updating is necessary. Our current chairman is Anthony Boyd and no, Esther has no plans of stepping down.

And in closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Our thanks to all who believe in what we do and stand with us. You make all the difference! Happy New Year!
