Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 1.29.20

The number one topic of discussion was the latest ruling by the Florida Supreme Court that the voice of the jurors when it comes to the sentencing phase no longer mattered, reversing a 2016 ruling. Until this latest ruling Alabama was the only state where a unanimous vote by the jurors was not necessary to impose the death penalty. Our hope, and of course it remains our hope is that one day before all too long we will not be first in everything bad and last in everything good. It appears that Florida now wants to claim this role and it remains to be seen what the consequences will be for Florida as well as for us. In stark contrast the recent stay and commutation in Georgia was precisely because the wishes of the jurors were respected.

On a more positive note we want to congratulate Equal Justice USA on its 30th birthday and on its new website. We have immense respect for its far reaching vision and are grateful to have worked closely with it during the moratorium drive. We would like to give its Executive Director Shari Silberstein the word: “ I’m so proud to kick off 2020 with two big announcements. First, EJUSA is turning 30 years old this year! And we’re celebrating this milestone with a new website! The new site is a declaration of our bold vision for justice reimagined. With your support, we’re transforming what justice is. We’re rejecting mass incarceration, executions, police violence, and racial injustice. Instead, we’re building the new systems we want — systems that deliver safety, healing, and accountability that restores to everyone affected by harm.”

On Saturday Esther will be attending the Quarterly Meeting of the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP. We are grateful for the many years of membership and support from this organization!

And in closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Our thanks to all who believe in what we do and stand with us. You make all the difference!
