Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 2.5.20

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 2.5.20

The State of Alabama set March 5th as the execution date for Nathaniel Woods. There are many issues about this date first and foremost that Nathaniel was not the shooter and that some issues that should have been raised were time barred. However as we are not Nathaniel’s attorneys all we who live near him can do and are doing is to be supportive.

We have sent out the Talking Points and information on how to contact the Governor to ask for clemency and as always they are posted on our website. We suggested that you use the Governor’s statement “All Life is Sacred” although people on death row are apparently excluded! Thank you to a long time friend in France with ACAT who responded instantly to the request to contact the Governor! Pamela Woods, Nathaniel’s sister organized a petition to save her brother’s life. We encourage you to sign it! http://chng.it/pfRTFcW42h

Esther attended the Quarterly meeting of the Alabama NAACP State Conference and had the opportunity to ask those who attended to contact the Governor on behalf of Nathaniel Woods and to leave flyers with the details.

The other topic of concern raised by individuals at the conference was the changes at Holman. As this is an issue of grave concern to all of us there was nothing Esther could say to alleviate concerns, nothing!

We like to close our report on a positive note and this was made very easy for us this week by UNA Librarian Jennifer Lea Pate’s reaction to our thank you card from Holman. In looking back on her work with the phadp exhibit and now the archives she wrote in part:” When I reflect back on my librarianship, now and in the future, I don’t know if I will ever work on something as meaningful and as important as this.” No thank you from us can be big enough nor express how deeply touched we are by this post on Facebook!

And in closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Our thanks to all who believe in what we do and stand with us. You make all the difference!
