Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 3.11.20

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 3.11.20

We are still stunned by the event of last Thursday when the powers that be in Alabama murdered an innocent man, Nathaniel Woods. Not that we had not seen this before, we had but each time the hurt, the loss, the grief is new and the question is how do we turn this into action to honor the man who was so ruthlessly and cruelly murdered by Alabama?

There is some consolation that it appears as though this time there will be a reckoning for the very mentally sick and ignorant leaders of this state. Your criminal act last Thursday when you murdered Nathaniel Woods, an innocent man in the death house at Holman did not remain secret but resonated, shocked and horrified this country. Article after article in and out of state, including specialist on Alabama death penalty journalist Lauren Gill and even articles in French and German expressed shock about what you did. What is more you refused to listen to individuals with more powerful voices than ours here on death row, men like Martin Luther King III and Senator Doug Jones.

We spoke about the momentum generated and what we could do to keep it going. We have written a letter to Senator Cam Ward about his misguided and uninformed Senate Bill which will bring about more injustices like last Thursday’s by speeding up an already immoral process called the death penalty. We also spent some time working on our next newsletter Wings of Hope which will be highlighting last week’s execution.

We appreciate new contacts made with various members of the press last week in particular with  Dorian Geiger a Freelance Digital Reporter | NBC Universal. “There appears to be no doubt on either side that Nathaniel Woods did not kill anyone,” Esther Brown, executive director of Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty, told Oxygen.com. What is important is not so much Esther’s statement but that by clicking on our name in the article one is taken directly to our website. Thank you Dorian and yes, we will stay in touch as per your request.

During these difficulties day we are doing our best to support each other. Thank you to all who were there for the family as well as for us. And thank you Pamela, Nate’s sister who worked so hard to save her brother’s life for these words: "Thanks Esther, I really appreciate all of your help and support during this process." And of course “Esther” stands for all of us of phadp.

And in closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Our thanks to all who believe in what we do and stand with us. You make all the difference.
