Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 3.25.20

At times like this, which most of us have never experienced before, it becomes more important than ever to flip things and see what is positive. We were delighted to see that last week’s scheduled execution in Texas was postponed because of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) epidemic, and yes friends, as time is a death row inmate’s friend we’ll take any extra time that we get! And then we saw that the attorney of a TN man who has a date at the beginning of June has used the virus to ask for a stay and in PA the attorney of a Death Row Inmate who is showing symptoms of coronavirus is seeking his client’s release for medical care.

So that is on the national front where there is definitely a beneficial slow down and what is happening with us at Holman? Naturally we are concerned for our family members as they are concerned about us, however we do take strength from the fact that we see each other as family and believe in what we do. We mentioned last week about our Chairman and others reaching out to the transfers from Donaldson. We are working on getting permission to invite them to our weekly meeting. We have added the ones who requested  to our newsletter list. We are welcoming back former members who left for various reasons, in other words we are being THE OTHER VOICE, the kinder voice, the forgiving voice benefiting ourselves in the process. One thing we know now more than ever we must be family and support each other just as you on the outside must do that in order to survive.

We wrote what we believe, backed up by the reaction of Advisory Board Member Dr. Katie Owens-Murphy, a good letter to Senator Cam Ward. The issue we addressed was the fallacy that the death penalty acts as deterrent, a fallacy that has been widely disproved. Our Chairman signed the letter and we hope that Senator Cam Ward will read it.

Congratulations Colorado! So glad that you no longer have a death row!

We are delighted to finally have an updated picture of our Board on our Facebook page. Thank you Advisory Board Member Britta Slopianka for putting it up for us. We appreciated the likes and comments that it triggered.

And in closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Our thanks to all who believe in what we do and stand with us. You make all the difference. Please stay safe!
