Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 5.27.20

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 5.27.20

Part of our weekly meetings as well as when we have seen each other on Yard have been taken up with conversations about our upcoming move to the Segregation wing. We have been told that the reasons for this move are long overdue repairs to our present placement. We understand that but to say that we are apprehensive would be an understatement. Without going into too much detail this move will mean cells with solid doors, the loss of our personal televisions and a new no smoking rule. Our concern is for the more fragile among us, those who either came to death row with a psychiatric disability or who acquired one while here. How will they cope and is it even reasonable to expect that they can? Yes, apparently there will be communal televisions but there are those among us who never leave their cells even to go to yard when they could because they suffer from depression and other psych issues. What of them? We are concerned!

Our thanks to City of Hope and Kairos who offered to pay to have electrical outlets installed in the cells. We thank them and regret that their generous offer was not accepted.

We just learned that after the move we will be receiving tablets which will definitely help us to stay connected with friends and family. We believe that there will be the possibility of video visitations as well as most probably movies. This is definitely a positive to look forward to!

We were contacted by a journalist with Newsy who is working to confirm the most recent new death sentences in the United States. We were pleased to provide the answers to his questions as to whether Alabama had had any new death sentence since 3.13.20 and the date of our last death sentence.

We are happy to announce that our latest edition of Wings of Hope has left Holman. Once it lands it will be on its way to the printer! As always we know you will enjoy it!

And finally for a wonderful piece of good news! It gives us great joy to welcome our long time friend and supporter Attorney Robin Konrad on her return to Alabama. Thank you for all you have done for us in court but also out of court for so many years!

In closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. You encourage us and make all the difference. Please stay safe!
