On Wings of Hope is a print publication created inside Death Row at Holman Prison in Alabama. With the exception of occasional outside contributions, it is written and edited by prisoners on Death Row. Below you will find excerpts from our newsletter. WORSE THAN TEXAS

l stole the title from the Economist because it triggers an instant reaction of shock and disbelief. How can little Alabama be worse that the mighty state of Texas? Mlghty at least when lt comes to the death penalty?

Well, we are worse than Texas when it comes to number of death sentences, and we are not speaking per capita. This is not new, so why has our state suddenly made headlines with articles proliferating and garnering attention nationally and state-wide?

THE POWER OF ONE

As we know, the title is not an original but it came to mind in thinking about the last few months and the progress brought about by so many in educating Alabamians about the death penalty. At meetings/conferences I like to hand out a flyer, which has our Talking Points on one side and on the other ten suggestions on how to BE THE OTHER VOICE. The power of one: you!

IT IS NOT DONE

Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty is the Alabama death penalty affiliate organization of the NCADP and as such we are one of many state organizations in the country, except that we are not. We are not one of many, we are unique. Our founders were on death row and our present chairman and board are also on death row at Holman Prison.

Silent Night

Hearing the opening notes of Silent Night takes many of us instantly back to memories of Christmases long ago. If you are a purist, like me, this song is so special so that it is only to be sung on Christmas Eve with family around the tree. That is my tradition, but of course the message is larger.
