Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison, 11.6.2013.

The first topic of discussion was the bill to be filed in the 2014 legislative session which would significantly limit the effectiveness of the Rule 32 appeals as they would be filed concurrently with the direct appeals. The intent of this bill is to speed up the post-conviction appeals process in capital cases. This would bring Alabama in line with Texas and Virginia, hardly states to emulate!

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 7.3.13

This week saw two important anniversaries, which were commemorated by the 20th Vigil of Starvin’ for Justice at the U. S. Supreme Court. The protest was timed to coincide with the June 29 anniversary of the court's 1972 ruling in Furman v. Georgia, which halted capital punishment, and the July 2 anniversary of Gregg v. Georgia, which reinstated it in 1976. Since the 1976 ruling there have been 55 executions in our state, 54 men and 1 woman. They are unforgotten!

We are keeping our eyes on developments in Arkansas. Interesting that its governor has said he would sign a bill for abolition or a bill for a new new execution protocol.

Also discussed was the arrival of the book Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, which I have made mandatory reading for all of my friends, actually have for years. For anyone, whether incarcerated or on the outside, it is full of insights one has perhaps known about without actually having put them into words.

Today was the day to sing Happy Birthday to Ronald Smith who is our Vice-Chairman and editor of the Christian Perspective in our newsletter Wings of Hope. A couple of days ago I posted the excellent article from the New York Times "When Lawyers Stumble, Clients Take the Fall" by Adam Liptak, which is about Ron's case. In speaking with Ron about all of this, he said to me that he feels that it will all come out for the best. Does that tell you a little about who Ron is? I think it does.

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison

We began the part of the meeting when I am on the phone with a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday to Anthony Boyd. With all the practice we are getting, we do appear to be improving, although it could also be due to the fact that today was the day for the Sub-Board to be present. Always good to have them out there, and not just because of their singing abilities!

We discussed the fact that the Alabama 2012 Death Penalty Update and Fact Sheet has been posted and sent out, and some of the responses received. It's purpose is to keep supporters engaged even when the death penalty in Alabama is not making the headlines.
