Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison

Topics for discussion were the many different voices speaking about the death penalty around the U.S. On the one hand there does seem to be a definite movement towards abolition, whether in California or CT and then, on the other hand, Nebraska chooses to use sodium thiopental, obtained illegally from a drug broker and against the wishes of the drug manufacturer. In Alabama we have no idea of the provenance of the drugs used nor of the execution protocol.

We discussed Talking Points for Thomas Arthur and Carey Grayson (aka Boo) and were delighted to welcome Boo back from "Single Walk." As we are a death row organization, we consult with the individual as much as possible about issues to raise when contacting the governor. I will be sharing the Talking Points with all of you.

Brandon Fountain, our Development Officer and Micah's House are planning a repeat of last year's Good Friday vigil in Birmingham. More on that later!

Most of the articles for the next edition of our newsletter Wings of Hope have been turned in. Now comes the arduous task of typing and formating and we are hoping for some typewriter ribbon soon.

Some of the men received positive legal news and are cautiously optimistic. We discussed the national shortage of the execution drug and are grateful for that as well as for the legal news.

We sang Happy Birthday to Jerry!

The Chairman reported on a positive meeting with the Death Row Captain. We are very appreciative of being given this opportunity to present some insights into who we are. Thank you!

We also reported on the recent Journey of Hope events in East Alabama and the fact that Bill Pelke was able to meet Senator Hank Sanders and present him with his book. There have been further communications from Witness to Innocence, and plans are being made for speaking engagements in Alabama.

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman

Today our interaction had to be brief because I am on my way to the Auburn Unitarian Universalist meeting of the Journey Of Hope with Bill Pelke. After that, we go to Roanoke and then Valley in the evening. Nevertheless, there was time to talk to each member, (small group meeting today), Board plus Sub-Board meeting next week. All are well and as always I received lots of positive energy from hearing their voices.

I am grateful for my Holman family! See you next week! Esther

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman

Among the topics discussed: the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP, Alabama Arise and Witness to Innocence have agreed to collaborate with Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty in 2012 to work towards abolition in Alabama. We are very grateful to all three organizations and welcome Witness to Innocence to Alabama. Actually, Witness to Innocence has already been active in Alabama, still we are grateful to be one of its focus states for 2012.

The great Cory Maples news broke during the meeting and of course all were delighted. It was a day of positive news from the commutation in Delaware to the news that Witness to Innocence has chosen Alabama as one of its focal states for 2012. WTI and phadp will be collaborating with the AL State Conference of the NAACP and Alabama Arise in bringing WTI speakers to Alabama.

All this on top of Senator Hank Sanders' announcement of an abolition bill and the Journey of Hope in Alabama! Are we on a roll or what?

There was lots of positive news to discuss today ranging from the Alabama Journey of Hope to several articles in the Birmingham News and the Guardian in the U.K., which all highlighted the problems with the application of the death penalty in Alabama. Also discussed were developments in CA and in Texas where a judge ruled that state's death penalty unconstitutional.
