Report from the Weekly Board Meeting at Holman Prison

Today the Board was pleased to welcome a young man to the meeting for orientation. He had already gotten into the swing of things by attending several Small phadp Meetings on his tier. Don't get us wrong! We are never pleased to see anyone come to death row, but we are pleased that phadp can offer worthwhile involvement and help.

The Board received a hard copy of the report of the innocence of Carlos DeLuna and felt hopeful that this has to make a difference. As they stated, it covered just about every aspect of what can go wrong with the law, except for jury override. Also discussed was the recent report on exonerations. I assured them that the execution of Carlos DeL...una had made headlines around the world and would not be forgotten.

The meeting began with a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday. We have some good voices on the Board and it was much appreciated!

We discussed the various positive lethal injection news around the country, the upcoming edition of our newsletter and an interview tomorrow on the New American Radio Show. It is always helpful to get input and to be able to bounce ideas off each other.

We are very grateful to the organizers for inviting us.

The decision of a North Carolina Court to ban the death penalty for a man under the Racial Justice Act was welcomed by all of us. Another step in the right direction!

Today we discussed long and short term lethal injection perspectives. We hope that the long term one as discussed in David A Love's article, "Lethal Injection as the Death Penalty's Last Stand" will soon prevail over the short term one, which sadly was illustrated by the execution in Ohio today. We remain cautiously optimistic, which in reality is our only choice.

What a roller coaster week it has been for all of us, and for nobody more than Carey who remained a rock for all of us throughout. The term "grace under pressure" was surely coined with him in mind. And so today it was time to talk about our emotions and just to be happy that Carey was at the meeting today.

Today we had a celebration of life party for Carey Grayson, phadp coordinator. It was sponsored by our good friends Christoph and Christa in Stuttgart, Germany. Our thanks to them, as well as to many, among them Bill Pelke, who asked me to convey special greetings to Carey. Perhaps it tells you a little about Carey the man, when I tell you that during our conversation he was very interested in hearing about possible developments for phadp and how he could/would assist me with them. I know he will.

The top issue discussed was the ruling by Federal Judge Leon banning sodium thiopental for lethal injection. Our biggest question is of course how this ruling might affect Tommy Arthur's lethal injection pleading before the 11th? At this point we are guardedly optimistic although the State is still planning tomorrow's execution.
